“A man, a woman and a tractor” – a typical, social-realist (kolkhoz) scenario. Kira Muratova’s love triangle is set at a fresh construction site, where plasterer Lyuba and drivers Nikolai and Misha ply their trades while actually fighting with all they’ve got for their love. This at first tender and then increasingly vehement romance, which moves Lyuba to turn her affections from macho Nikolai to shy Misha, employs the building site as an ironic backdrop, developing into a wonderfully buoyant ballet of love between puddles, cement mixers and dizzyingly high scaffolding.
An early masterpiece that is rarely screened, from an acrobat of cinema, with wonderfully weird actors playing marvellously strange characters. A spectacle, one that couldn’t possibly run more contrary to the images and narratives of the official canon.
