This engagingly comical film-novella by Lucian Pintilie, President of the 2007 goEast festival jury, handles profound questions with the lightness of the spoof. Towards the end of World War II, a troop of Romanian soldiers retreating from the Red Army is joined by two allied German officers carrying a crate of champagne. The ravenously hungry duo frankly articulate their contempt for the “thieving Romanians”, and one officer bizarrely boasts about owning one of the two surviving examples of the most valuable Romanian postage stamp. He passes his treasure round the soldiers for their inspection, and it mysteriously disappears... In Pintilie’s latest film, glimpses of Europe’s present-day reality come flickering through its past
