Imagine an opening ceremony without an audience. Today, the 20th edition of goEast – Festival of Central and Eastern European Film starts and this nightmare vision becomes reality. That's why we decided to bring the opening ceremony of our anniversary edition to your home! Chill your vodka, get dressed and make yourself comfortable on your sofa. Tune in at 7 PM CET – on Facebook, Youtube or our website – when we raise our glasses in both East and West.
For the festival between 5th and 11th of May goEast offers exclusive programme highlights on demand and free online events on its website. Drop by!
Much is different and yet remains the same. Even though the prize money of our three main competitions will be split up between all filmmakers as a gesture of solidarity in times of Corona, there will still be a jury decision. In our goEast Competition section this year jury president Christoph Terhechte will be conferring online with Darya Zhuk, Nino Kirtadze und Zane Balčus. The Romanian actor Vlad Ivanov complements the jury, but at the moment he has no internet on his location. This shows that not everyone profits from the online programme. We still firmly believe that film culture belongs on the big screen.
So, after May 11th goEast will continue. We bring Central and Eastern European film back to the cinema – the Symposium (July 24th to 27th), the Pan-European Picnic (August/September) and the entire Competition section (November) at exground filmfest. Today goEast kicks off its most unique and longest-running festival ever!
goEast on Demand starts with a wild mix: Alongside a worthy prayer in pictures, there will be a crazy B-movie which will go into film history as the first Estonian-Ethiopian co-production ever. Additionally, we offer our radical short film programme.
At long last available in Germany : The son of Andrey Tarkovsky memorialized his father with the biographical essay film ANDREY TARKOVSKY. A CINEMA PRAYER. With personal, mostly unreleased archival footage and sound recordings he approaches his fatheräs heritage and creates a meditative portrait of the artist and man Andrey Tarkovsky. The director shares his views on art, religion, family and freedom.
The Estonian-Ethiopian exploitation mashup JESUS SHOWS YOU THE WAY TO THE HIGHWAY on the other hand is far from meditative. In it, Agent Palmer sets out to stop the computer virus "Soviet Union". With its boundary-crossing aesthetics the film is a wild ride through the history of B-movies: wild exploitation cinema with absurd Martial Arts elements in a retro sci-fi setting, shot on 35mm. A crazy trip.
The ANARCHO SHORTS are back and can be enjoyed on demand this year: brief and anything but well-adapted, radical in both form and content. This time out, the programme explores urban spaces, one of the films even turns Moscow on its head. Popular genres are satirised here too: for instance, a superhero finds himself increasingly by people throwing themselves off of skyscrapers for fun, just so he'll save them; also on offer: an experimental excursion into horror tropes divided into three episodes. Seven films that are all equally challenging. All films are available until May 11th.
Experience culture from Central and Eastern Europe online. With our free online programme you can embark on a journey of discovery ranging from inspired discussions with filmmakers, to virtual cinema going in the Caligari FilmBühne and even into the future of Central and Eastern European film itself.
Czech director Václav Marhoul hosts a masterclass and Romanian filmmaker Radu Jude joins us for an extended Q&A. Both directors can be experienced either live in a video conference or later through a recording of the event. Make a note:
// Masterclass Václav Marhoul, May 10th at 11:30 am CET on our website
// In Discussion with Radu Jude, May 10th at 4:30 pm CET on our website
Meanwhile a virtual Caligari is hosting the Open Frame Award. You can visit with either a VR headset or install the necessary software on a regular PC. Each evening between 6 pm and 8 pm there will be guided tours of Caligari VR for the Open Frame Award and you can join with avatars exclusively designed for goEast.
Additionally, you can accompany young filmmakers and creatives of the Central and Eastern European film industry on their next steps in their careers. The East-West Talent Lab will be online entirely with all workshops and discussion panels included. Once again it will culminate in the Project Market Pitch where 15 new project ideas will be presented.
We will be presenting even more highlights of goEast Online for you in our daily newsletter and here on our website.
What would goEast be without vodka? Our friends form Russian Standard came up with a special drink, which goes alongside perfectly for our opening ceremony.
