MEET THE FILMMAKERS

Festivalblog Day 6

MASTERCLASS VÁCLAV MARHOUL AT 11:30 AM CET

Václav Marhoul worked on his feature film THE PAINTED BIRD for seven long years. For this monumental work, shot on 35mm film, which celebrated its world premiere at the 2019 Venice International Film Festival, Marhoul managed to get Stellan Skarsgård, Harvey Keitel, Udo Kier, Barry Pepper and many other acting stars to come in front of the camera. The entire cast learned Inter-Slavic, a made-up artificial language, which is universally applicable in Central Europe, where the film is set.
When one knows that Marhoul directed the Barrandov Film Studios in Prague for seven years and brought the first Hollywood productions to the Czech Republic in the 1990s, one understands better how he managed to create this intense work of art.

THE PAINTED BIRD was the object of heated discussion in Venice, especially for its explicit depiction of violence. In the scope of the master class, Marhoul (born in Prague in 1960) will speak about his career path as an actor, director and producer, and address the topics of violence on screen, taking an uncompromising approach to art and his fascination with the history of the Second World War.

IN DISCUSSION WITH RADU JUDE AT 4:30 PM CET

It is a tradition at goEast that the audience has the chance to gain exclusive insight into the creative process and oeuvre of the featured Portrait guest. This year, director par excellence Radu Jude will be joining us for an extensive discussion where he will share details about his work. Viewers will be able to ask the filmmaker questions about his idiosyncratic aesthetics, his working process and his choice of subject matter, as well as about Romania both past and present.

EAST-WEST TALENT LAB: THE GRAND FINALE IN THE PROJECT MARKET PITCH

In front of a live audience (online via Zoom), the participants of the East-West Talent Lab present their selected project ideas from the areas of short and experimental film, video art and short and feature length documentary.

The young talents come from Central and Eastern Europe as well as Germany. The best pitch wins the goEast Development Award, initiated in 2014 and featuring prize money in the amount of 3,500 euros. The Renovabis Research Grant (also endowed with 3,500 euros) for a documentary film project treating human rights issues is being given out as well.

Each pitch takes a maximum of five minutes and is immediately followed by feedback from the expert jury, of which Kirill Krasovski is one of the members. He is the founder of the production company faktura film, which specializes in author-driven feature films and documentaries and works with directors such as Julian Radlmaier and Angela Schanelec.

The jury also consists of Jutta Krug, who since 2000 has been responsible for documentaries and theme evenings in the ARTE editorial office of WDR, Cologne, and since 2005 has been in charge of the WDR culture department as well.

The third and final jury member is Ira Tondowski, co-founder of Tondowski Films. As a producer she is responsible among other things for BORN IN EVIN, which very recently received a German Film Award as the Best Documentary Feature.

The winners of the East-West Talent Lan will be announced during the award ceremony, on the festival website and in a press release.

BEHIND THE SCENES – GOEAST UNVEILS ITS INNER WORKINGS

Today we are offering a look behind the scenes of goEast during the festival week. Even though our film and event programme is exclusively digital in nature this time, we have to work physically in the real world to offer you the best festival experience possible.

Our customer service for instance is reading every one of your wishes from your eyes and is working exclusively squatting like a true Slav while wearing face masks. This way we are staying fit and healthy. And if your questions cannot be answered some time, a glance into our extensive FAQ might do wonders.

The goEast Festivalstudio is the centre piece of our head quarters. All of the virtual meet-ups are coming together here, be it the East-West Talent Lab with workshops and pitches, the opening of the meme exhibition or the masterclass with Václav Marhoul and the discussion with Radu Jude. You can be with us in this room on a daily basis.
