TABOR UCHODIT V NEBO QUEEN OF THE GYPSIES

The proud “amour fou” between Loiko (the horse thief) and Rada (the healer) which Moldovan Emil Loteanu depicts in this liberal adaptation of two separate texts by Gorky, is set in the Bessarabian steppes at the turn of the 20th century and would become the Soviet blockbuster of the year in 1976, with 65 million tickets sold. Two young people love one another here, to death, and all of the other romantic notions concerning the goings-on in and around a “gypsy camp” are duly serviced as well. And yet: the eroticism and exoticism of both dance and music here are so radically displayed and Rada’s witchy rage so overblown that one never loses sight of the fact that every single second takes place within a film.
