POSLEDNIY TABOR THE LAST CAMP
In 1935, Stalin’s measures to forcibly collectivise the peasants were still in full swing. The “permanent settlement of nomadic peoples” was also a part of the grand Stalinist modernisation programme. In THE LAST CAMP, it is kolkhoz leader Ivan Licho who heads up the settlement efforts, supported by lovely Al’ta (“Romėn” star Ljalja Černaja), and opposed by violent patriarch Danilo (Jewish émigré Alexander Granach in the lead role). Intrigues vs. system integration. A genuine film-historical rarity.
