VIDEO-RESISTANCE YouTube, Instagram, TikTok & Co in the time of protest
"The revolution will not be televised", as the famous Gill Scott Heron song proclaims. And, as a matter of fact, the state television services in Belarus and Russia show effectively zero images of the street protests, strikes and arrests taking place there. Those in Belarus and Russia who rely exclusively on the official channels for their news would hardly suspect that the two countries are both in a state of upheaval. Still, countless individuals have recorded protest experiences, injustice and violence using cell phone cameras, and many have even edited them into online videos that at times exhibit a very cynical worldview. In a lecture featuring footage from such videos, goEast will investigate this form of online audio-visual resistance, taking a look at its advent, creation and reception.
