In the rugged highland idyll of a small Albanian mountain village, life is surprisingly multi-cultural: Besnik the shepherd is used to compromises thanks to his catholic mother, his communist father and his Muslim and orthodox Christian in-laws. However, the peaceful co-existence in the village and in his own family is put to the test when Besnik makes an incredible discovery: while praying in the local mosque he uncovers the ancient mural of a Christian Saint, hidden behind the plaster. The Muslim majority in the village is flabbergasted by the -now undeniable- fact that the mosque has once been a church. Where their ancestors found a common place of worship quite natural, the current villagers consider it to be a sacrilege of the purest sort.
There is no way back: Besnik finds himself at the heart of a controversy. He refuses to understand why a place of worship can't contain several religions. In his own multi-faith family a fight breaks out about his father's house and Besnik now experiences first-hand how easily religion can lead to exclusion. The shepherd is forced to go his own way.
This modest, carefully directed film from Albania is a rare gem. With great subtlety and a poetic visual language it focuses on the many facets religion can have and makes an unusual contribution to an ongoing debate. A film about places of faith and the kind of shelter a community can provide.
