VIDEO LEVÉL MAGYARORSZÁGRÓL / EIN VIDEOBRIEF AUS UNGARN
HUN 1993 / 11 min
Director: Márta Elbert
DOUBLEFEATURE
Produced by the independent Black Box Studio on commission for the USA, the video letter provides impressive testimony that Hungary’s lurch to the right began in the early 1990s, although the world tends to view this development as a recent phenomenon. A self- elected “sergeant” in the fast-growing neo-nazi movement proclaims his ideology of hatred for Jews and gypsies, while the images show his message being disseminated in football stadiums and seemingly moderate political rallies. The disquiet of the Budapest-based video pioneers is evident: the newly gained democracy faces a genuine threat.
