AMIRA'S CHILDREN

Life in Syria is marked by war and destruction. Amira's family also feels they have no other choice than to leave their homeland. Due to a serious heart defect diagnosed in her young son, the family is evacuated to Czechia so that the boy can receive medical treatment. For over a decade, filmmaker Markéta Ekrt Válková accompanies Amira's new life there, documenting her ambiguous experiences of settling in and still feeling like an outsider, of integration and the lingering desire to return home. The result is a multi-layered long-term study that eschews melodrama while revealing what integration actually means for a real-life family.
