BUDAPEST NOIR

Bioscop

A cynical reporter and a photographer attempt to shed light on a murder and the subsequent police cover-up. The setting: Budapest in 1936. Anti-Semitism and fascism are spreading fast. Budapest lovers will recognise many of the locations featured in this meticulously staged historical mystery, in which director Éva Gárdos pays both narrative and stylistic tribute to American film noir of the 1940s and 50s. Through judicious use of colour and slightly modified gender politics, Gárdos manages to create a fresh take on the noir template. The result is a gripping film that reflects trenchantly on both its epoch and its genre.
