The last days of the Warsaw Uprising in September 1944: The city is under fire from German forces, many districts have already fallen, while the Soviet Army stands idly on the other side of the Vistula. A group of resistance fighters from the Polish Home Army attempts to escape through the destroyed city and is ultimately forced to flee into the sewer canals. Andrzej Wajda channels a story of courage, desperation and futility. The film was honoured with the Special Jury Prize in Cannes in 1957 and would launch Wajda's career in the world of international cinema.
