DANTON

After weeks of illness, Robespierre awakes from fever dreams – by this point his former comrade-in-arms and now foe Danton has already returned to Paris. A bitter power struggle to determine the course of the French Revolution erupts between the pleasure-loving Danton (Gérard Depardieu) and the ascetic Robespierre. Wajda shows how political ideals can devolve into terror, with the rampant spread of paranoia and the guillotine's transformation into an instrument of power. The parallels to Poland in the early 1980s under General Jaruzelski were no coincidence.
