THE REVOLUTION THAT WASN'T

Symposium

With its grotesque mixture of xenophobia, vulgar communism, nationalism and populism, the National Bolshevik Party of Russia came to fame as part of the “Other Russia” coalition of opposition parties. Polunina accompanies her subjects over a period of several years, and unearths the stuff of tragedy: A father who sacrifices his son; treason, crime and punishment. The narrative about Anatoli, once second in command to NBP leader Limonov, is based on events connected with the 2008 elections. As Anatoli gradually withdraws into religion, the church leaders forge a deal with the NBP, and his sons embark on heady political careers. Grand cinema, disturbing and radical.
