Who makes a summer comedy about Holocaust remembrance? Radu Jude did just that. With consummate skill and a light touch, he tells the story of theatre director Mariana, whose intellectual and ethical aspirations cause her to let everyone down – the amateur actors, the administrative official from the city funding her current play, and her lover – while still remaining true to herself. A prominent role in the film is accorded to Mariana's stage play, which treats Romania's participation in the Holocaust – a historical fact which hardly anyone apart from Mariana is willing to examine.
