MAN OF IRON

In this sequel to MAN OF MARBLE (POL 1977) set in Danzig, anxious radio journalist Winkel is tasked with initiating a smear campaign against shipyard worker Maciej Tomczyk. As he gathers information from the intended victim's acquaintances on the ground, Winkel becomes increasingly inspired by Tomczyk's tenacious fighting nature and desire for justice, as well as by the general sense of imminent change and optimism surrounding the Solidarność union, which eventually leads him to abandon his mission and stand on the side of the striking workers. Andrzej Wajda combines documentary footage with meticulously staged political drama. The character of Maciej Tomczyk is clearly inspired by Solidarność leader Lech Wałęsa, who also makes a cameo appearance in the film.
