The setting is 1980s Vienna, where Slovak artist Perla lives with her daughter Julia, a talented and dedicated pianist. Her mother manages to scrape together just enough money every month to be able to afford the lessons she deserves. Then she meets Josef, who offers her and Julia love and security. Alas, telephone calls from Czechoslovakia cause her repressed past to resurface and awaken the memory of Julia's father, who demands that they meet – a very risky proposition for Perla. Alexandra Makarová has crafted a Cold War family drama that eschews easy answers and gets under the viewer's skin.
