THE YEAR OF THE CANNIBALS

Corpses lie upon the damp, newly washed streets of downtown Milan. Passers-by step over them without a thought. From the sides of neighbouring buildings, signs warn: "Death to any who touches the rebels' bodies". Antigone (Britt Ekland) resists, and searches for her brother among the dead. She is aided by Teiresias (Pierre Clémenti), a foreigner who was washed up onto the beach by the sea's waves. Liliana Cavani re-imagines Milan as the Thebes of 1969: Sophocles' ancient text becomes the basis for a new narrative, in which a totalitarian fascist state runs rampant and a young woman and foreign "prophet" boldly rebel.
