Winfried, a music teacher from Germany, travels to Bucharest to visit his estranged daughter Ines, a business consultant who is hard at work optimising international companies in the Romanian capital. Their lifestyles collide amid business hotels and post-socialist realities. Alas, instead of heading back home, Winfried returns as his alter ego Toni Erdmann: sporting a wig and false teeth, he insinuates himself into Ines' Romanian work surroundings as her boss's supposed coach, subverting this environment with sly humour in the process. Reluctantly, Ines decides to play along. As the Romanian executive producer, Ada Solomon played a considerable role in realising the film with local talent and locations.
