BALANCE

Symposium

Five identical figures balance on a platform hovering freely in a space. When one of the group heaves a mysterious crate onto their level, a fateful battle begins to take possession of the treasure it allegedly contains. Eventually four figures have already fallen, and only one is left behind with the (useless) crate. The allegory created by the Lauenstein twins is open to a number of interpretations, not least political. BALANCE might also be seen as a parable on the fragility of the competitive situation during the Cold War. The animated film won the Oscar® for “Best Short Film” in 1990.
