BLOCKADE

Portrait

DOUBLE FEATURE
It came to epitomize the trauma of war: the 900 days of the Leningrad Blockade between 1941 and 1944. The search to find pictures for the period of desperate endurance and people dying in their masses has continued up to the present day. Together with the archivist of the St. Petersburg Dok-Studio, Loznitsa sourced hand-picked silent-film footage and composed a unique scoring and retelling of day-to-day life in extreme circumstances. Fire-fighting scenes intensified, bustling cannons an acoustic event. And suddenly the corpses on the street. At the end people gather for the spectacle of a public execution.
