CROSSING BOUNDERIES
In 1989, two villages in the Caucasus swapped location. At that time, the population of Kerkendj in Azerbaijan was Armenian, while the villagers of Kyzyl-Shafag (subsequently Dyunasbogh) in Armenia were Azerbaijani. Neither minority community felt safe in the light of the dispute over Nagorno-Karabakh, and decided to swap their villages, which are 400 kilometres apart. The two populations collectively relocated to a new home in a different country.
