In addition to a challenging programme of films and exhibitions, Moscow’s Museum of Cinema provided intellectuals and cinephiles with an open space for discussion, whether about culture or politics. Ten years ago the “Musei Kino” was thrown out on the street. Since then the personnel have been toughing it out with courage and unshakeable optimism under adverse conditions in makeshift quarters. Especially Naum Kleiman, Eisenstein expert and “father” of the museum, whose removal from the directorship recently sparked international outrage. CINEMA: A PUBLIC AFFAIR accompanies a quiet but adept protest in the struggle to save a life’s work. Kleiman was honoured with the 2015 Berlinale Camera for his contributions to cinema.
