DONKEYS OF THE BORDER

The frontier separating Yugoslavia from Albania bristled with tension in the late 1960s. But one Yugoslav schoolteacher who continues to fly the flag for Albania hatches a plan to cross the border. Caricaturing the mutual suspicion and intolerance of the neighbours on either side of the border, Jeton Ahmetajs creates an atmosphere so absurd that incidents like donkeys defecting to the enemy camp are just part of bizarre tapestry of everyday life. This directorial debut is also the first film production to emerge from the sovereign state of Kosovo.
