A young man runs after a train, tries to jump on it and is killed in the process. Already at this point the lines between reality and fiction begin to blur, as the setting is a film set. Not only are those that are familiar with the tragic circumstances of Zbigniew Cybulski’s death confused here – we wait in vain for him to appear. The audience follows his wife in the fictional story – she at first believes that he has only disappeared again – on her Beckett-like quest, in which the absent one is present in every moment and yet appears not to exist. Wajda’s film is an homage to the rebellious actor, whose death would become part of his persona in retrospect and render him a legend in Poland.
