Symposium

Tamara’s husband is dead, his body laid out at home, in his Georgian village. Gathered around him – his devastated family. Only Tamara cannot mourn his passing in person, she is far from the scene, earning money for the family as a caregiver in distant Italy. Still, mobile phone and amplifier make the impossible a reality and soon Tamara’s threnody intones from the loudspeaker. Salomé Alexi’s cinematic commentary on post-transformational times is not merely satisfied with the confrontation between old and new. Tamara’s litany soon becomes an indictment – for while the unemployed men in the Georgian village are busy moaning about the lack of local female support, the women set off on the illegal and dangerous trek towards the West in order to care for strangers there for pay.
