FOOTSTEPS IN THE SAND

Competition

An airport in Bulgaria. Nencho, a young customs officer, has been in crisis since his girlfriend left him. One night he starts up a chance conversation with Slavi. The lone traveller who knows how Nencho feels: he suffered a major disappointment of his own several years ago, when he was let down by his childhood sweetheart Nelly. She promised to be true but fell in love with somebody else. Slavi found himself increasingly embroiled in conflicts with the communist authorities, and decided to flee Bulgaria. His years of travelling took him round half the world. After leaving Austria for the USA, he lands literally in the gutter. A stroke of fortune enables him to buy his own truck and start up a business. Driving through the United States he hears about the fall of the Berlin Wall. That is Nencho’s cue to return home and – who knows? – maybe see Nelly again. A road movie not far short of romantic as it traces the biographical ruptures and migratory movements provoked by a dictatorial regime.
