INSECT

Bioscop

Jan Švankmajer grants us a glimpse behind the curtains. The eminent director himself explains his approach and shows how his famous surrealistic stop-motion animations take shape. In a small theatre, a group of amateurs is rehearsing the 1922 satirical play Pictures from the Insects’ Life by the Czech Čapek brothers. While several of the performers engage in a power struggle with the director, the female lead develops a fear of bugs. With INSECT Švankmajer proves that he is still one of Europe’s most radical filmmakers in spite of his 84 years.
