KILLER

Portrait

“Jerzy Kiler gave all the money to the Polish film industry. He ended up regretting the move..” Machulski’s box-office smash about a taxi driver who gets mistaken for a contract killer ends on a sly, self-deprecating note. This fast-paced comedy is set in Warsaw of the 1990ies, with all the attendant turbocapitalism run rampant and widespread corruption in the worlds of business, politics and policing that you’d expect. At the centre of this mess, we encounter taxi driver Jerzy Kiler, who becomes an underworld folk hero in the American mould through no doing of his own. Truth be told, Kiler is anything but your typical gangster – an androgynous, trusting soul, who nonetheless manages to bamboozle mob bosses and police chiefs alike. KILER was so successful and original that Hollywood even snapped up the adaptation rights to the film – though they haven’t yet managed to make a version of their own.
