MAN AND BEAST

Symposium

Franz Köhler is stuck in a work camp near the quickly collapsing eastern front. His half-brother Willy serves in the SS guard detail. When it becomes clear that the Red Army is sure to reach the camp in the foreseeable future, the order goes out to kill all of the prisoners. They for their part catch wind of the plan and decide that Franz should escape in order to lead the liberators to the camp... Cain and Abel in 1944 – staged by the sole significant young Austrian director of the first two post-war decades. Booed at its Berlinale premiere (almost as one would expect), MAN AND BEAST remains captivating today as an intermediary work between the old movie industry and the New German Cinema.
