NOT SO FRIENDLY NEIGHBORHOOD AFFAIR

With his most recent film, Academy Award winner Danis Tanović delivers a first-rate Balkan comedy, complete with family feud. In the old town of Sarajevo, a heated debate has broken out: Who makes the best ćevapčići? A competition ensues, featuring two main rivals: enterprising Enis and traditional grill master Izo. When a Croatian influencer singles out Izo for praise, the conflict finally flames up in earnest, spilling over to the two chefs' children, Lana and Orhan, a couple, now in classic Romeo and Juliette style no less. Adeptly staged, Tanović's tale of an absurd rivalry incorporates pandemic allusions with great humour and subverts stereotypes in a sophisticated way.
