PAPUSZA

30 Years of "Post Soviet" Cinema

At the centre of this film is the problematic relationship of Romani poet Bronisława Wajs and Polish writer Jerzy Ficowsky, who encouraged Bronisława, nicknamed "Papusza" ("little doll"), to write. He enabled translations into Polish of Papusza’s work – making her the first Romani poet to appear in Polish and one of the most prominent Romani poets worldwide. The film manages to avoid a romantic view of the Roma people while touching upon complicated topics like antiziganism, the Roma holocaust and the position of women within the Roma community.
