PILGRIMS

Competition

Four years after Mata's murder, his brother Paulius and his girlfriend Indre search out the places connected to his death. The quest for traces of the departed begins in the restaurant where Mata was last seen alive, by Leva, a former employee, and peters out with Paulius in jail for destroying a car mirror in a rage. To better understand Mata's death, Indre and Paulius gain access to a family house that is up for sale, where a picture of their deceased friend was once taken in the basement. The pair is not only occupied with the circumstances of the crime – they also want to use any means at their disposal to get inside Mata's feelings during the kidnapping. At first understood as an absurd undertaking, their actions rapidly reveal themselves to be a special form of grief therapy. Paulius and Indre search for answers to Mata's death in the past, reconstructing what has already happened and lingering in reminiscence. Characterised by the everyday violence of provincial Lithuania, but also by moments of melancholy and dry humour, Laurynas Bareiša stages an unusual road trip in PILGRIMS. At its heart: a tangled web of emotions and an intimate examination of a loved one's death.
