POLISH PRAYERS

Competition

"No sex until marriage, homosexuality can be cured and abortion is a crime". These shared ideological principles bind Antek to his buddies in the Brotherhood – a group of like-minded young conservatives – as they stand on the front lines of an anti-Pride demonstration. The young man, 22 years old when filming begins, grows up surrounded by a deeply religious conservative family in today's Poland. His life is still determined by Catholicism, nationalism and a patriarchal conception of masculinity. Gradually, he gains more influence within his Brotherhood. Alas, Antek is as curious as he is deep. As he falls in love, he begins to challenge things. In her documentary film debut, Hanka Nobis accompanies Antek for four years, at survival camps, church functions and family visits, celebrations and on dates, witnessing a moving journey of self-discovery. With courage and an open heart, she paints a portrait that not only reveals the internal struggles of a young man, but also manages to lay bare the deep division within Polish society.
