SUNDAY MATINEE

It is with great anticipation that we invite everyone to the Sunday Matinee at Caligari Filmbühne, which is taking place this year in the presence of one of the most significant filmmakers in European cinema: Agnieszka Holland. Her extensive work as a director, screenwriter and actress since the late 1970s has amply demonstrated deep political engagement and a finely tuned feel for interpersonal relationships and historical events in an extraordinarily multi-faceted manner. Her 1985 film ANGRY HARVEST for instance is rightfully considered a feminist classic of European cinema. We will show her most recent work, SPOOR, which, disguised as a thriller, tackles questions concerning ecological awareness and personal responsibility – with tongue firmly in cheek, loads of suspense and a special gift for aesthetic arrangement.

With SPOOR, venerable master Agnieszka Holland delivers a wild genre mix that can be described roughly as an anarcho-eco-feminist thriller, featuring socio-utopian moments. The screenplay is based on Olga Tokarczuk’s novel "Drive Your Plow over the Bones of the Dead". Retired bridge construction engineer and eccentric Janina Duszejko is an amateur astrologist, vegetarian, an expert on all things human and animal, who lives in a small town in the Sudetes and butts heads regularly and fiercely with the local backwoods good old boy crowd – including hunters, priests and sluggish cops practiced in the art of cronyism. When precisely these hunters, all important gentlemen, start turning up dead in droves, Duszejko proposes the theory that they were murdered by wild animals. But who is really behind the serial killings? Holland, who recently directed a season of the US series HOUSE OF CARDS, weaves a wonderfully subversive whodunit with breath-taking images of nature, a lush soundtrack, biting humour and bizarre, endearing characters, including a rich supporting cast of wild boars, deer, badgers, hedgehogs and insects.
