After his military service, Witold begins to work for a state-owned company that organises exhibitions. His initial plans to study stagnate. The prospect of extensive travel is tempting, although the corruption Witold witnesses among his colleagues offends him deeply. His moral stance hardens the more his terminally ill mother threatens to slip away from him. Witold has never really gotten over the trauma of his father’s early departure from his life due to a fatal accident in the Himalayas. Zanussi entwines the widespread frustration regarding corruption of the time with personal motifs drawn from the realms of religion, ethics and science.
