The film is based on the finest work of Hungarian Romanticism, which was written by the “Hungarian Dickens”, the still popular novelist Mór Jókai. The hero is the brave and resourceful Danube sailor Timár Mihály, who gains the treasure of the rich Ali Csorbadzsi and marries Timea, the daughter of the Pasha. But the marriage is unhappy, despite his ever-growing riches. He eventually finds happiness on a secluded island in the Danube, together with young Noémi, a social recluse who bears him a child. Timár leads a double life for many years…In 1917, director Sándor Korda founded the “Corvin” production company aiming at American-style high-standard mass productions. Of the 24 films Korda shot in Hungary, only AZ ARANYEMBER survives.
