A Ucrainian village in the era of the German occupation. While her sister, the wife of a Soviet front officer, prostitutes herself as the lover of the German village commander, pregnant peasant woman Olena Kostjuk fights as a partisan. When she returns to the village to give birth to her child, the German village commander tries to get Olena to give away the partisan posts, employing endless psychological and physical tortures. But even this cannot break the resistance fighter’s will. When Soviet troops free the village, the returning husband avenges Olena’s sister’s betrayal.
