Beyond Belonging
Chechnya, 1999: nine-year-old Hadji was forced to flee with his baby brother after his parents were murdered by Russian soldiers. The NGO employee Carole takes the little boy in to her home, while at the same time his eldest sister is out searching desperately for Hadji and her youngest brother. THE SEARCH is a remake of the eponymous Fred Zinnemann classic from 1948. Michel Hazanavicius, who won several Oscars with his black and white silent film THE ARTIST (2011), has reset the story in the second Chechen war, thereby creating an involved political commentary – and an indicting anti-war film – that gets under your skin. At the same time THE SEARCH makes use of well-oiled genre tropes.
