FAIRY GARDEN

Competition

Fanni – recently kicked out of home – lives together with 60-year-old unhoused Laci inside a self-built hut erected in a forest clearing. The 19-year-old transwoman dreams of love, a feeling of closeness, acceptance, a better life and gender transition. Not an easy matter in Hungary, since it is officially not possible to have one's gender changed – and homelessness is criminalised too. In spite of all this (or maybe even precisely because of it), Fanni takes to live streaming on social media in an attempt to generate attention for her situation and the issue in general, as she shares her personal experiences with her fans. While Fanni repeatedly suffers bouts of depression, fierce Laci looks after the couple's basic needs. He chops firewood, plants food, provides emotional care for Fanni and helps find cash to pay for hormone therapy. What develops over time between the two is almost akin to a father-daughter relationship. The film team, who accompanied the protagonists for three years, allow us to partake in a unique relationship – persisting in defiance of societal and political conditions.
