Competition

Armed with skateboard and camera, filmmaker Dávid Mikulán sets off in search of individuals that he can film for a university project. After a slew of interactions, almost as if pulled by fate he follows a trail of chalk on the asphalt of Budapest – which ultimately leads him to Sanyi Marku, a kid from the lower classes drawing on the street, aka Mikulán's future protagonist. In an episodic fashion, Mikulán films Sanyi again and again over the following ten years – later on, Bálint Révész joins the film project. Together they go skating with Sanyi's friends, explore and demolish an abandoned building, spend time with his family or look for a quiet spot to reflect. Along the way, the many facets of Sanyi's inner life and a full range of feelings manifest themselves in statements and the scope of conversations. The documentary film not only presents a personal fragment of a coming-of-age process and the associated changes, newly gained freedoms and resulting consequences – ultimately it also challenges social barriers and confronts us with a final revelation previously hidden under the surface.
