A BIG FAMILY

Symposium

Pre film: SON BOLELSHCHIKA / THE DREAM OF A FAN, dir. Gerbert Rappaport, 1953, 4 min.

The Zhurbin shipbuilding dynasty is a very Soviet constellation, and a response to the pre-1953 conception of the Stalinist state as one big family. Small truths move into the centre, the somewhat different Communist reality becomes visible. Ilya Matveevich, head of the family, takes clandestine algebra lessons from a young female tutor, while his model sons make mistakes when it comes to love. The time call for flexibility – restructuring complete with rejuvenation, emancipation, individualism of the thaw period. The Party, by and large, takes a back seat. A superb cast (distinguished at Cannes), great characters – as one might expect from Kheyfits.
