JAN ŠVANKMAJER

RheinMain Short Films

The Czech artist and filmmaker Jan Švankmajer is known around the world above all for his surrealist works. In this brief documentary, however, he allows us to share in a private moment – namely, life after the death of his wife and long-time collaborator Eva. Through philosophical and biographical anecdotes, this short film invites the viewer to empathise and have fun. That has as much to do with the striking black-and-white visuals as it does with the warm, jovial presence of Jan Švankmajer himself.
