THE ICEBREAKER

Highlights

The disaster film genre rarely makes an appearance at goEast, but here comes Nikolay Khomeriki’s THE ICEBREAKER at full tilt. The year is 1985. The Soviet ship Mikhail Gromov and its crew headed up by the likeable Captain Andrei rammed into an enormous iceberg and have been drifting for weeks in the Antarctic Sea. A new captain – an unpopular hardliner – is supposed to fix the situation. Alas, supplies and power are running perilously low, and mutiny looms... This spectacularly staged, high-energy odyssey in perpetual ice captures its characters’ inner and outer conflicts and political power games with a keen eye. The central plot line, bristling with masculinity, is flanked elegantly and matter-of-factly by peripheral story lines featuring the captains’ wives back on shore.
