Péter Bacsó tackles a naive hero: József Pelikán who conscientiously tries to fulfil all the tasks imposed upon him. These include managing an indoor swimming baths, cultivating citrus fruits in Hungary, inventing a ghost train suitable for proletarian thrill-seekers. He ends up in jail each time. And now he finds himself in court, expected to testify against a friend in a show trial. The director deftly turns his dark material into a grotesque comedy; the film was initially banned, but released several years later.
