Tragi-comedy about Josef and Marie Cizek, who live in small Czech town under German occupation. After meeting a Jewish former neighbour who has escaped from a concentration camp, they agree to hide him in their flat. Among their regular visitors is Horst, a friend of the family who is also Marie’s admirer – and a collaborator. When Marie spurns his advances, Horst is eager for revenge and decides to billet a Nazi in Marie and Josef’s apartment. Marie now claims to be pregnant, a ruse that leads to all kinds of complications. The Oscar-nominated film is especially striking for its multifaceted, finely drawn characters.
