FIGURANT

RheinMain Short Films

In the theatre world, the term "figurant" refers to a silent background role, though it can also be applied to individuals who represent something other than themselves, like their country for instance. Denis Lavant slips into both of these roles here, reduced to a nameless extra, a number, as a participant in a war movie production that is barely distinguishable from the brutal reality of the battlefield, causing his expressive face to become contorted in genuine mental anguish.
