In the winter of 1991, a twelve year old Serbian girl was brutally murdered in Zagreb. The perpetrators were quickly found, but they never faced any punishment. A quarter century later, the well-known Croatian director Oliver Frljić works on a theater play about the case.
SRBENKA deals with the shadow that the war at the beginning of the 90s throws over the contemporary society and its interpersonal relationships. The film unravels a sensitive yet deeply intense dialogue about fear, trauma, identity and nationality. The rehearsals become a collective psychotherapy through the disclosure of the Croatian and Serbian ensemble's experiences.
Slijepčević' observational method shows the younger generation's difficulty in coping with the historical legacy and reveals the continuing societal crevice.
